Kapsali
On the southernmost tip of the island far below the cliff-top fortress at Chora lies the stunningly picturesque village of Kapsali.
Kapsali is generally recognised as the most cosmopolitan village on the island and is unique in that it is set around two bays. The first of these features a beautiful beach, predominantly sandy with some shingle and pebbles, around which the village is based.
Overlooking the beach are several restaurants and a couple of bars offering plenty of opportunity to relax and savour the ambience.
The beach road is closed to traffic throughout the summer in the evenings meaning the only distraction is the occasional souvenir shop. A mini market for essentials can be found just off the main street and there is also a taxi rank in the village.
For those of an energetic disposition Kapsali has some amazing sights in the vicinity. A pathway through the pine forest and up the cliffs leads to a small church clinging precariously to the side. From here, the views of the bay and the imposing fortress are spectacular, and on a clear day the island of Crete can be seen in the distance.
