Avlemonas
Possibly the most romantic village on the island is Avlemonas. On the east coast, far removed from most other villages, little white houses with blue shutters prevail in a typically Cycladic style.
The focal point of the village is a delightful little cove surrounded by bougainvillea and palm trees. Illuminated for full effect in the evening and overlooked by two cafeterias and one of the two fish tavernas this is the perfect place to relax and soak up the atmosphere. The other taverna is further along towards the harbour where there is also another small bar open throughout the day.
A tiny little mini market provides for most necessities and fresh bread is also delivered on a daily basis. The only other shop is a souvenir shop hidden from view amongst the back streets.
Although there is no beach in the village, swimming is possible in the cove. Alternatively a ten minute walk leads to Paleopoli, a seemingly endless stretch of golden sand with crystal clear waters. One corner of the beach offers sun-beds and umbrellas from the end of June onwards.
